### No Need to Panic in Case of Snake Bite; Timely Treatment Can Save Lives – Civil Surgeon **Rupnagar, September 19:** International Snake Bite Awareness Day was observed at the district level under the directions of Civil Surgeon Rupnagar Dr. Vivek Kataria. On the occasion, people were made aware of snake bite prevention, immediate first aid and the importance of seeking timely medical treatment. Health Department officials said that incidents of snake bites increase during the rainy season. The District Health Department is maintaining full preparedness to provide necessary medical services in emergency situations. They informed that anti-snake venom is available at all Community Health Centres (CHCs) and government hospitals in the district. In case of a snake bite, the victim should be taken to a hospital without delay and treated by a qualified medical professional. Dr. Vasudha Batta said that after a snake bite, the victim should be taken immediately to a government hospital instead of being taken to untrained persons or practitioners of unscientific treatments. For any medical information or health-related advice, people can contact the Health Department helpline at **104**. She said that in case of a snake bite, an ambulance should be informed immediately and the victim should be taken to the hospital. The victim should be kept calm and the affected limb should be immobilised with the help of a splint to prevent movement. She stressed that there is no need to panic after a snake bite, as timely and appropriate treatment can save the victim's life. People were also cautioned not to cut the bitten area or attempt to suck out the venom with their mouth. Ice should not be applied to the bite area, nor should it be massaged. People should not take medicines on their own or apply herbs or any other substance to the bite site. The Health Department appealed to people to wear closed shoes or long boots when going outdoors. A torch should always be used while going outside at night. Homes and surrounding areas should be kept clean, and shoes should be thoroughly shaken and checked before wearing them. Lakhbir Singh, along with other staff members of the Health Department, was present on the occasion.
