India’s Tech Journey: From Pokhran to AI in 2026 (National Technology Day)
On 11th May 1998, India successfully conducted nuclear tests at Operation Shakti in Pokhran. On the same day, India also tested the Hansa-3 aircraft and the Trishul missile. To honour these achievements and to promote scientific temper among citizens, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared 11th May as National Technology Day in 1999.
Since 1999, on National Technology Day, the Ministry of Science and Technology has honoured scientists with national awards, organized exhibitions, launched new schemes for students, and spread awareness about the responsible use of technology from classrooms to villages.
Technology is no longer a luxury; it has become a basic tool like pen and paper. It has made human life more comfortable and convenient.
Technology in Daily Life
Banking Sector
UPI and digital payment systems save time and make transactions easier and faster.
Transportation
GPS, electric vehicles, and online booking systems have made travel more comfortable and efficient.
Healthcare
AI helps doctors in early diagnosis, while telemedicine connects villages with hospitals and specialist doctors.
Technology in Classrooms: From Books to AI
Today, even a 15-year-old student uses technology in daily life.
- Students use AI tools like Google Gemini and Meta AI to prepare school and college projects.
- They prepare notes and study materials using digital platforms.
- They clear doubts instantly through online learning tools.
- They learn coding, robotics, and data science with the help of modern technology.
New courses on AI and technology are now becoming part of school syllabi so that students can connect with modern innovations and create new ideas for the future.
Responsible Use of Technology
Technology helps us in many ways, but it can also be misused. Hackers and cybercriminals can steal personal data and misuse information.
Safety Rules for Students
- Never share personal information, photos, passwords, or OTPs on social media.
- Use AI for learning, not for cheating in examinations.
- Always verify information before forwarding it online.
Message for Youth
Today, India is becoming technologically advanced in every field. The theme for 2026 — “Responsible Innovation for Inclusive Growth” — reminds us that technology should reach everyone, from cities to villages, and should always be used with honesty, ethics, and responsibility.
Conclusion
From Pokhran in 1998 to AI in 2026, India’s journey proves that when science and youth work together, they can build a better future for all.
Let us pledge to use technology ethically and contribute towards building a technologically advanced and inclusive Bharat.
